Pemerintah telah membatasi media sosial setelah adanya aksi 22 mei 2019 di Jakarta. Akibatnya, banyak pengguna tidak dapat memposting video dan foto di sosial media seperti WhatsApp, Facebook, nstagram dan Twitter. Menjadikan Pengguna memakai VPN Gratis sebagai opsi.
Pembatasan sosial media dilakukan oleh pemerintah untuk mencegah berita bohong atau hoax yang dengan leluasa menyebar di sosial media . Tetapi beberapa orang mengakali dengan menggunakan Virtual Private Network atau “VPN” agar bisa mengakses sosial media tanpa masalah.
Padahal jika kita tidak bisa bijak dalam penggunaan vpn, hal ini malah bisa merugikan diri kita sendiri, karena bisa jadi menimbulkan efek negatif yang akan datang di kemudian hari.
Seperti yang disampaikan oleh Menteri Komunikasi dan Informasi, Rudiantara, Penggunaan VPN tidak disarankan untuk membuka blokir WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter dan Facebook. Karena bisa menimpulkan beberapa efek negatif yang akan hadir, seperti pencurian data pribadi.
Selain itu, VPN juga bisa digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data kita secara umum. Setelah itu, ada kemungkinan besar virus dan malmawe bisa masuk ke perangkat kita. maka dari itulah, kominfo tidak merekomendasikan penggunaan VPN tersebut untuk mengakses data pribadi.
Rudiantara lebih lanjut menyampaikan bahwa pemblokiran ini dilakukan tidak secara luas karena hanya terbatas pada pengiriman foto dan video.
Orang masih bisa berkomunikasi dan batasannya tidak ekstrem, karena mereka masih bisa mengirim teks baik melalui Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, dan Facebook.
